Why You Should Care
Many people in urban or non-agricultural areas may believe that this disease would affect only livestock farm owners, zoos, slaughterhouses and other livestock populated areas. However, if foot-and-mouth disease appeared in North Carolina, people in all areas would feel the consequences, if not in travel restrictions, then in trips to grocery stores or restaurants. The disease can spread up to 40 miles airborne, 60 miles with a strong wind. Besides living with quarantines restricting people to their immediate property, North Carolinians would see significant increases in beef and pork prices. Some restaurants may find it prohibitive to buy beef or pork. Leather prices would skyrocket as well. In addition, trade restrictions would close North Carolina's borders, economically crippling the state.
