Stivender loves to relate tales about his old-Catholic school upbringing. He tells most of his stories from real events and blends in traditional stories, scriptural material and performances of song accompanied by banjo and harmonica. He is renowned for his book, Raised Catholic (Can You Tell?), now in its fourth printing. Stivender is another NSA Circle of Excellence ward recipient.
