Inquiry-Based Minds Want to Know Educational Tour
Students, teachers, and administrators from Burton Elementary School, Durham, NC, visited UNC-TV on February 8, 2006 for an "Inquiry-Based Tour and Literacy Event." Dr. Merle Price, retired teacher and UNC-TV trainer, led the 25 elementary students in a "Recycle/Reuse" activity. In addition, students and teachers screened the PBSKIDS GO! website, specifically, Eeko World. The website was a hit, as student after student gave it a "thumbs up" score.
Clifford the Big Red Dog made a surprise visit and led the children in many activities, along with his helper, Ms. Pamela Hines, Prek-12 Manager. Clifford knows that children's self-esteem is central to their growth as competent individuals. So he models 10 positive character traits known as Clifford's Ten Big Ideas. Some of the ideas are: Be a good friend, have respect, be kind, be truthful, work together, believe in yourself, be responsible, and help others. These 10 big ideas are also linked to the General Assembly character traits.
The children viewed the Reading Rainbow instructional video "Patchwork Quilt." Pamela Hines and Clifford, encouraged the students to read the book, Patchwork Quilt. Afterwards, the students, created their own paper quilt using recyclable materials. The students persevered until they completed with pride their finished product- "the Burton Rocks Quilt."
Clifford gave each child a big hug and students and teachers received individual and class portraits!
After the students completed their quilt and literacy and science activities, they took a tour of UNC-TV studio and educational facility.
At the end of the day, Clifford provided a special bag of educational treasures to each child! Fun was had by all!
