Thomas W. Lambeth Lecture in Public Policy

The UNC-Chapel Hill  Thomas W. Lambeth Distinguished Lectureship in Public Policy honors 1957 UNC alumnus Thomas Willis Lambeth. The lecture series was endowed in 2006 with the mission to bring distinguished practitioners and/or scholars of public policy to the campus.

Thomas W. Lambeth lead the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation from 1978 to 2000 and oversaw the fulfillment of over $260 million in grants to address North Carolina's most pressing public policy issues. Lambeth spent his career devoted to eduction, democracy, civic engagement, and the ideals of the public good and the progressive and innovative ways of achieving it.

James A. Joseph served as ambassador to South Africa from 1996 to 1999, and is currently Professor of the Practice of Public Policy Studies at Duke, where he has launched the U.S. - Southern Africa Center for Leadership and Public Values.

Hodding Carter III

This year, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's Thomas W. Lambeth Lecture in Public Policy was delivered by Hodding Carter III. During his lecture, Professor Carter discussed "Public Policy, Public Opinion and the Public Good."

The Lambeth Lectureship honors 1957 UNC alumnus Thomas Willis Lambeth and was endowed in 2006 to support lectures by scholars and policy-makers.

Hodding Carter III currently holds the position of University Professor of Public Policy and Leadership at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Before coming to UNC, Professor Carter served as president and CEO of the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.

Also in his career, Hodding Carter III served as State Department Spokesperson for President Jimmy Carte for four years. After his tenure with the State Department Professor Carter went on to become a television commentator and was award 4 Emmy Awards and the Edward R. Murrow Award for documentaries for his media criticism series Inside Story. He also went on to serve as chief correspondent for PBS's FRONTLINE and was a panelist on This Week with David Brinkley.
