UNC-TV's Ready To Learn initiative for children and Ready To Earn for adults continue their emphasis on literacy. Ready To Learn promotes school readiness and early literacy to North Carolina children and their families by suggesting different learning and teaching strategies through their workshops. Ready To Read/First Book, part of the Ready To Learn program, provides books, parent training, and monthly contact with parents and children. Ready To Earn provides Workplace Essential Skills and GED Connection for adults seeking basic education or preparation for the GED exam, as well as Crossroads Café and Connect With English for non-English speakers.
Some of UNC-TV's children's programs also reinforce
children's literacy by encouraging teachers to read the
original books to their students. Clifford the Big Red Dog, Sagwa the Siamese Chinese Cat and Anne of Green Gables are based on children's books, which teachers can read to their students after showing segments of the shows.
Other children's programs actually teach new words or
encourage visits to the local library. Reading Rainbow and Sesame Street characters introduce new words or read sentences or stories to their young viewers. At the close of the program, Arthur encourages children to visit their local library, and Between the Lions takes place in a library.
In addition to applying for several grants to partner with
community colleges, state universities, and state literacy
agencies such as Motheread, UNC-TV hosted a conference in May with the American Public Television (APT) focusing on literacy. Staff from UNC-TV networked with representatives from many outside agencies.
UNC-TV is North Carolinas only statewide broadcasting
system, made possible through a unique partnership of public investment and private support. UNC-TVs commitment to producing, administering and broadcasting local and national programs about literacy makes it one of the states most important sources of information.
