Where To? What Next? Premier
Premier of Where To? What Next?, a new youth education video and a portion of The National Parks: America's Best Idea, a new film by Ken Burns, at the Boys and Girls Club of Henderson County. This project was made possible through the support of the Boys and Girls Club of Henderson County, Eastern National, Friends of Carl Sandburg at Connemara, the National Park Service, and a grant from the National Park Foundation through the generous support of the Evelyn and Walter Haas Jr. Fund.

UNC-TV's popular, book-loving marsupial mascot Read-a-Roo invites children
of all ages to visit some of our state's most-beloved national parks to learn firsthand
about their exquisite treasures. Partnering with Boys and Girls Clubs around the state and Cooperative
Extension, UNC-TV welcomes many families who have yet to visit a National Park. Through screenings of The National Parks: America's Best Idea, readings from children's books about National Parks, guided tours and activities from the Junior Ranger booklet, families will learn about how underserved populations helped create the National Park System and their unique role in the parks today. A panel discussion with Great Smoky Mountains National Park Superintendent Dale Ditmanson, Blue Ridge Parkway Superintendent Phil Francis and Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site Superintendent Connie Backlund. Saturday, September 19, 2009 will be a National Park Day at Wright Brothers National Memorial from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. as the National Park Service and UNCTV celebrate America's national treasures. UNCTV's Read-A-Roo will be at the site to join in with activities that encourage children to read. Kids . . . don't forget to ask about the Wright Brothers Junior Ranger Program! National Parks: It's a Wonderful Life

Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site Superintendent Connie Backlund will share her perspectives as a 30-year National Park Service career employee who has served at parks across the country along with sharing a brief preview of the upcoming Ken Burns' documentary, "The National Parks: America's Best Idea", at the Henderson County Public Library, Hendersonville, North Carolina.

of all ages to visit some of our states most-beloved national parks to learn firsthand
about their exquisite treasures. Partnering with Boys and Girls Clubs around the state and Cooperative Extension, UNC-TV welcomes many families who have yet to visit a National Park. Through screenings of The National Park: America's Best Idea, readings from children's books about National Parks, guided tours and activities from the Junior Ranger booklet, families will learn about how underserved populations helped create the National Park System and their unique role in the parks today. Groups are encouraged to bring a picnic lunch, camera, bottled water, and plan to have a day of educational fun. Also, participate in the 2009 National Public Lands Day events. September 26th, 2009 is National Public Lands Day. National Parks Service (NPS) is celebrating this day by holding screenings in all 391 National Parks in conjunction with Volunteer Day. The day has been dubbed, 'Make America's Best Idea Even Better'- the idea is to foster stewardship and engage the public with a variety of activities. Saturday October 10th 2009 will be National Public Lands Day/NC Big Sweep from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. as the public is invited to help care for our public lands by planting trees, work on trails, and clean up litter. Free lunch will be provided to volunteers and afterwards everyone is encouraged to enjoy the many exhibits we will have such as live snakes, a bee cage, traditional archers, mountain biking, and much more. The Overmountain National Historic Trail Association will have revolutionary war re-enactors, demonstrate traditional crafts, and provide guided tours of the Overmountain Victory Trail. There will be a book swap hosted by UNC-TV's Read-A-Roo. Kids....remember to bring an old book you would like to trade! Click here for activities.
