Hemlocks
Dr. Tom Linden travels to Banner Elk and Black Mountain to meet Will Blozan, a man determined to save North Carolina's hemlocks from being destroyed by the wooly adelgid, a tiny insect that is destroying the trees and impacting the area's ecosystem.  Students enrolled in the Medical and Science Journalism Program at UNC-Chapel Hill assisted Dr. Linden in producing the story.

Dr. Tom Linden continues his series on environmental heroes in North Carolina by introducing us to Alex and Betsy Hitt, an Alamance County couple who are at the forefront of sustainable agriculture. It's a way of raising food that is healthy for consumers and animals, does not harm the environment, and supports and enhances rural communities.  Dr. Linden was assisted by students enrolled in the Medical and Science Journalism Program at UNC-Chapel Hill in producing the piece.

North Carolina Bookwatch Host D.G. Martin interviews author Marisha Pessl about her book "Social Topics in Calamity Physics."  The story focuses on the travels of a teenager and her father, a charismatic professor from college to college and the unique encounters they have. The inteview was conducted live from Lenoir Rhyne University's P.E. Monroe Auditorium in Hickory--a first for North Carolina Bookwatch.  Ms. Pessl's complete interview airs on Sunday, December 13th at 5 p.m. on UNC-TV.

Kelly McCullen introduces us to the Scott family in Bear Creek, North Carolina.  Many of the family members changed careers to create a very unique fruitcake and other delectable treats that have gained international attention.

RHA Howell/Sam Hedrick Kelly McCullen profiles a non-profit mental/physical health facility that sends its workers back to college if they have the initiative to improve their work skills.  Kelly follows up with an in depth interview with RHA Howell President Sam Hedrick on workforce sustainability.
