Professor Escott examines the attitudes and actions of Northerners and Southerners regarding the future of African Americans after the end of slavery. He also focuses on President Abraham Lincoln's role during the Civil War.

Ms. Shea will talk about Sustainability initiatives at UNC-Chapel Hill. The University of North Carolina has received a national award for water reuse. In addition, the new Education Center at the North Carolina Botanical Garden is expected to be the first public building to receive Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Platinum certification. It is the highest level of certification for green architecture. UNC-Chapel Hill has received federal stimulus funding to create an Energy Frontier Research Center focused on the next generation of photovoltaic cells and solar fuels.
