Ms. Watson and Dr. Darity will discuss his report to State Board of Education to set up a state committee to look at nurturing programs for students and the pilot "Project BRIGHT IDEA" program. Project Bright IDEA was developed by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction to develop the interests and unusual abilities of young children in underrepresented groups. These populations include children, regardless of race or ethnic group, who have limited English language experiences, cultural backgrounds, economic disadvantages, and/or educational disadvantages, disabilities, or differences which make it difficult for them to demonstrate their potential on traditional identification measures of talented and gifted. The pilot project resulted in a US Department of Education grant in 2004 to conduct research. Ms. Watson will discuss the results of the report and the implications for students.
