Being a Fit Community often encompasses more than just learning to eat right and be active.  It is an emotional change in the way people live their lives and that it what you will see in the Town of Black Mountain, North Carolina. 

In part two of our Fit Community series in partnership with Fit Together and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina Heather Burgiss and photojournalist Mark Stroupe take us to Black Mountain, which is nestled in the Swannanoa Valley in Western North Carolina.

The series explores how the town is literally growing healthy habits to last a lifetime through its community gardening tradition.  You will meet volunteers who help grow food for people in need and others who grow food to feed their families healthier options. Continued.....

  • Population: 7,511 (2000 Census)
  • Median Income: $35,541
  • 10.1% of population is below the poverty line
  • The town is named for the Black Mountain range of the Blue Ridge range in the Southern Appalachians.
