Carrboro, NC
NC Now Feature

Carrboro has more people per square mile than any other town in North Carolina.  Residents live close to shopping, jobs, and other activities of everyday life.  Carrboro town leaders make a concerted effort to create and support policy that provides easy access to bike trails, pedestrian friendly walkways, and recreation.  People are able to bike or walk to restaurants, grocery stores, and community services.

The series explores the Libba Cotton Bikeway and how this stretch from Carrboro to Chapel Hill is often busier than most city streets and is known as the most used bike path in the state and among the top in the country.  You’ll hear from people who bike from Carrboro everyday and think the town encourages people to be active as part of normal life

The locally owned Weaver Street Market provides a main street presence on healthy eating in Carrboro.  You will hear from Cat Molkski of the Weaver Street Market about the impact of the health food store on Carrboro’s attitudes towards healthy eating.

“I think Carrboro is a Fit Community because it is a thinking community," says Molkski. "We think about the decisions when it comes to food, housing, diet, lifestyle, exercise, and work.”

The world acclaimed Carrboro Farmer’s Market is also a hub of healthy eating in Carrboro.  There are many choices for local fruits and vegetables that people are able to give their families as healthy alternatives.  Another important highlight for health in the town is growing healthy kids, a program through the Orange County Partnership for Young Children funded by a Fit Community Grant which partners low income families with two community gardens in Carrboro.  Sixty percent of those families are Latino and have backgrounds in gardening in their native countries.  The families enjoy sharing the growing and harvesting of fruits and vegetables with their children.
