"One
thing I must say about my dad, because he was a coach, he
taught me that we owe [players] because they play for us.
I think, because of him, I was raised right about the human
family."
In his 36-season career at the University of
North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Dean Smith won 879 games, more
than any college basketball coach in history. Smith offered
fresh insights on promises and problems facing college basketball
during one of many appearances on North Carolina People. Of
his winning coaching style, Smith told Bill Friday, "Always
praise some action you want to see repeated.I don't believe
in false praise."
