"Teaching
is at the very core. We've got to make the profession a much
more dignified, distinguished and respected profession; they
must be given everything that they need to turn out our children
in a way that they can be proud of our educational system."
Presidential Medal of Freedom winner John Hope
Franklin, America's foremost African American
historian, educator, and an author of dozens of books including
the classic, "From Slavery to Freedom", is noted
for his scholarly reappraisal of slavery during the American
Civil War era. Franklin heard first hand how race plays out
across America in his role as chairman of the advisory panel
to the President's Initiative on Race, where he engaged in
honest debate about racial issues in a search for solutions.
As a James B. Duke Professor of History Emeritus at Duke University,
Franklin has stressed the importance of the black struggle
in shaping modern American identity.
