Most
people will remember Terry Sanford in terms of his many hats,
as a former paratrooper, former FBI agent, former governor,
former president of Duke University, and former United States
senator. Most important though are the lessons he left for
all of us, especially for those like William Friday, who were
lucky enough to count him as a personal friend and who were
inspired to public service as an example. Sanford said about
women in politics, "I think [women in politics] is one
of the greatest turn of events I've seen. I've always felt
if you get more women in politics it would be a much better
endeavor. Women generally have a broader view of things, women
generally are more unselfish, less likely to have a private
agenda.we've always needed more women."
