This musical journey, set in the Blue Ridge Mountains, showcases the exceptional fiddle playing of Tommy Jarrell, his thoughts on music and his tales of learning and playing tunes as a boy. Two memorable sequences include Jarrell’s visit to the Library of Congress to play the prestigious Stradivarius violin, and his retelling of a field collecting trip to learn tunes from a Civil War veteran.

Filmmaker Profile: CECE CONWAY

Cece Conway is Associate Professor of English at Appalachian State University, as well as a folklorist and filmmaker who concentrates on American folklore and traditional music. She is currently co-director of the interactive video exhibit “The Banjo: America’s First Musical Invention” for the National Museum of American History at the Smithsonian. Conway’s film “Julie’s Oldtime Tales of the Blue Ridge” aired on the Visions 100 series.
