Past Season
(Narrative – 12 minutes)
Set
at a whites-only lunch counter in the 1960’s, Special Day
tells the story of William, one of many black participants in a
local civil rights sit-in. Torn between commitment to his fellow
protestors and the duties of marriage and parenthood, William faces
a difficult decision: participate in the civil rights movement in
the hopes of a better future and risk all that he has worked for
and achieved, or do nothing, and maintain the status quo. Through
symbolic imagery and emotional scenes, Special Day illustrates
the conflict that William and other African-American men and women
faced between supporting their families and supporting their cause
(and how the two were indelibly interconnected).
