The Claytoons and the Hand of Doom
1) How did you come up with the idea for the film?
Brandon Jones—a then 8th grade student at St. Pius X School, originally wrote the idea for Claytoons and the Hand of Doom. All the 8th grade students were asked to submit a script idea as part of their filmmaking unit.
2) How long did the production process take?
We began doing tests for the animation in January of 2004.
3) What challenges did you experience in the creation of the film?
The challenges of working with 40 students to create animation are enumerable. The main drawback was that I see the students for 45 minutes each week in groups of 10 to 12. Each group had to preview the previous animation and pick up where the other group left off. It was like making a quilt.
4) What is your favorite memory from creating the film?
I always enjoy watching the students watch their own animation. They get very excited to see their characters and sets in action.
5) When people have finished watching the film, what do you hope they take away from the experience?
First, I want them to know that the movie was made by kids. Second, I hope they see the message in the film is one advocating peaceful solutions to conflict.
6) What type of reaction has your film received from viewers
The film has received very positive reactions so far (of course it hasn't been shown outside of the school and a few living rooms).
7) What advice would you give to aspiring young filmmakers?
I would advise them to watch lots of movies made by other independent filmmakers, particularly those who step outside of the Hollywood box.
8) Please tell us about the next film you plan to work on.
I will be teaching art again at St. Pius in the 2004-05 school year and have another group of 8th grade students to work with in making animation.
9) What are your thoughts on the film industry in NC?
I am glad to see places like UNC-Greensboro and the North Carolina School of the Arts continuing to educate and promote young filmmakers in North Carolina.
