Metacarpus
1. How did you come up with the idea for the film?
I was thinking about my grandmother and I was surprised at how easily I could remember what her hands looked liked and how they moved. This memory caused me to start noticing my own hands more. Then I couldn't stop looking at people's hands. I thought if I found hands so interesting other people might too.
2. How long did the production process take?
6 months
3. What challenges did you experience in the creation of the film?
Metacarpus was a practicum student project so while I was making it I was also taking other classes.
4. What is your favorite memory from creating the film?
I really enjoyed interviewing all of the people in the film. Most of the interviewees I contacted where total strangers who took time out of their busy schedules to participate in the project. I was very pleasantly surprised to have such support.
5. When someone has finished watching the film, what do you hope they take away from the experience?
I hope that people take away a greater appreciation for what their hands can do.
6. What type of reaction has your film received from viewers?
The people who have come up to me after festival screenings have been very positive.
7. What advice would you give to aspiring young filmmakers?
Make as many films as you can. Even if the films aren't perfect, you will become a better filmmaker.
8. Please tell us about the next film you plan to work on.
I am currently working on a series of experimental shorts featuring the music of local bands.
9. What are you thoughts on the film industry in NC?
I have found if you want to make independent short films in the state there are lots of great people who are willing to help you out. I think North Carolina is a wonderful supportive environment where filmmakers want each other to succeed.
