See North Carolina as never before! Whether visitor, recently relocated or longtime Tar Heel, UNC-TV brings more of our state home to you—to discover and to love. Inspired by the pages of Our State magazine, UNC-TV’s half-hour monthly series, Our State, takes you down-home in North Carolina for an in-depth look at the people and places that make our state great! Compelling stories, stunning digital videography and thoughtful narration take you beneath the surface, providing answers to the hows and whys of all things Our State.
The series is the work of a top notch crew led by award-winning producer/director Jim Bramlett. A pioneer in high definition productions and new technologies at UNC-TV, Bramlett specializes in capturing North Carolina’s culture. Working with the state’s top experts and best talent, he is responsible for such series as IQ—Science, Nature, Technology & the World Around Us, Folkways with David Holt, An Evening With Doc Watson and UNC-TV’s first high definition production Carolina Preserves.
In 1933 Carl Goerch founded the magazine as a means by which people could become “…more appreciative of their state by becoming better acquainted with it.” Now published by Bernard Mann, owner of Mann Media in Greensboro, Our State: Down Home in North Carolina maintains Goerch’s name on the masthead and retains his original vision. Each month more than half a million North Carolinians enjoy its thoughtful look at all that is good in our state.
“We are grateful to UNC-TV for selecting Our State Magazine for this show,” says Mann. “The production is outstanding and we are so proud to see our stories and pictures as part of this program. BB&T’s enormous financial commitment made this program possible. This is another in their long standing support of the best things in North Carolina.”
“We’ve been proud to call North Carolina home since 1872,” says BB&T advertising and public relations manager Ron Denny. “And we’re equally as proud to support our friends at Our State magazine and UNC-TV by sponsoring this outstanding TV series. “UNC-TV has successfully brought the beautiful pages and stories of Our State magazine to life. They have carefully captured many of the great things that make North Carolina so unique, special, and well-loved.”
UNC-TV’s Director and General Manager Tom Howe echoes such enthusiasm, “UNC-TV is delighted to be working with BB&T and the publishers of Our State magazine to produce a monthly series that will present beautiful high-definition television images and fascinating, important stories about the people and places that make North Carolina special. UNC-TV, Our State magazine and BB&T share a commitment to excellence, and that is why this collaboration will be an enriching viewing experience for our audience.”
Even when converted for viewing in the current broadcast format, Our State’s extremely high resolution offers a stunning visual experience. Like its print counterpart, Our State helps preserve the past, anticipates the future and celebrates the present through unforgettable stories and images that make our state great! Our State is produced by UNC-TV in partnership with Our State magazine and generously supported by BB&T.
UNC-TV’S OUR STATE WINS EMMY® AWARD
The Nashville/Midsouth Chapter of The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS) presented the 22nd Annual Midsouth Emmy® Awards at Nashville’s Schermerhorn Symphony Center on Saturday, January 26, 2008. UNC-TV’s Our State and its production staff, Jim Bramlett, producer; Michael Burke, director of photography; Daniel Cook, editor; Brian Faulkner, writer/narrator; Morgan Potts, editor; and Lisa Waldo, associate producer, earned the award for best Magazine Series. Cook accepted the Emmy at the Nashville ceremonies on behalf of the UNC-TV team.
"It's always nice to have one's work recognized and appreciated," notes series originator Bramlett, "and while nominated in previous years, it's very exciting to win this year. I can't imagine a finer team of folks to work with; each person contributes unique talents to make the Our State television series something of which we are all proud."
"A person not named in the nomination but whose work proves integral to the Our State project is musician/composer Fred Story, of Concentrix Music Design in Charlotte," adds Bramlett. "Fred also won the Music Composer/Arranger Emmy Saturday night for the musical score to UNC-TV's original production Monet in Normandy, so we were very pleased to see Fred's work recognized as well."
