Jazz vocalist Nnenna Freelon is a five-time GRAMMY nominee who is proud to call North Carolina home. In this exclusive to Our State, Ms. Freelon performs selections from her newest project, entitled, Blueprint of a Lady, Sketches of Billie Holiday. The CD is available from Concord Records. Performed live on the campus of Duke University, Ms. Freelon is joined by her full band for their hauntingly beautiful tunes, Them There Eyes, God Bless the Child, and What a Little Moonlight Can Do.

Ms. Freelon also took time from her worldwide performance schedule to speak with John Brown, Director of Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Studies at Duke University. They spoke regarding Ms. Freelon’s philosophy on Billy Holiday’s legacy, music education, and being true to yourself as an Artist. This conversation is artfully edited within the full-length song performances.

‘If we don’t have it, you don’t need it’. That phrase used to sum up the contents of hundreds of country stores that served as the only outlet for dry goods in small towns and hamlets all across North Carolina. Did you think all of these stores had been swept away by big-box mega shopping complexes? Think again.

Billy Barnes takes us to the mountain foothills town (more of a crossroads, really) of Bostic to meet the Washburn Family and their amazing country store. Edward is the fifth Washburn to head the family business and when you visit the store, the chances that one of his grandchildren is on duty are pretty high.

In addition to being known for breath-taking mountain scenery and as the location of a thriving Christmas Tree industry, West Jefferson is home to North Carolina’s only cheese factory. The Ashe County Cheese Company makes up to 50,000 lbs of cheese a week. The factory is just around the corner from Main Street, and we’re invited to see how all that delicious cheese is made!
