No matter how fast our lives seem to be going, time really doesn’t move any faster than it ever did. Which is good news for the large clocks that adorn the top of many of North Carolina’s civic buildings. Some of these mechanical machines are close to 200 years old and it takes a dedicated team, who are often volunteers, to keep these timepieces operating. The towns of Henderson, Hillsborough, Madison, Old Salem, and Yanceyville have just such a clock, and just such a dedicated team of caretakers.

What is it about a parade that North Carolinians enjoy so much? Is it the bands? Is it the beauty queens or the muscle cars? Or is it the excuse to eat cotton candy while sitting on the curb of Main Street? Whatever it is, four distinctly different parades from the towns of Asheville, Faith, New Bern, and Wilmington show us how North Carolinians publicly celebrate special events.
