Long before airplanes, trucks, or even trains existed, waterways provided the essential economic link between the colonies that would become the United States of America. One of the most important of these links was the Great Dismal Swamp Canal. Crossing the North Carolina – Virginia border, the canal linked the Chesapeake Bay with the Albemarle Sound. Carrying recreational boating traffic today, the canal is listed in the National Register of Historic Places and has been designated a National Civil Engineering Landmark. Celebrated storyteller Bland Simpson takes us on a journey down the Great Dismal Swamp Canal and helps us see just what’s so great about this swamp and its famous canal.

The Elizabeth II is a representation of a 16th century merchant vessel, like the type of ship that brought the first English speaking colonists to North Carolina’s shores. This ship was built to carry education, not commercial wares and she does this both in her home port of Manteo and by sailing to other coastal communities in our state. Join us as this two masted sailing vessel takes her volunteer crew through the world’s largest body of inland water, the Pamlico Sound.

Being 300 years old, the town of Bath lays claim to many North Carolina firsts – first official port of entry into the new colony, first shipyard, and first public library, to name a few. Today, Bath’s residents relish the town’s history and the fact that time has not ravaged the quiet little town. Locals and visitors alike are still able to take their early evening stroll along streets first laid out in 1705.
