Nestled in the heart of Raleigh’s Pullen Park is a gem that generations of children have adored. The Dentzel Carousel has seen children, and adults, climb aboard its hand carved animals for the better part of a century. You won’t find just horses here – there’s lions, giraffes, cats, and rabbits also. Pullen Park’s carousel is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is one of 23 remaining historic Dentzel carousels. And how could a carousel animal gallop without organ music? Pullen Park’s carousel animals gallop to the sounds of an early 20th Century Wurlitzer 125 Military Band Organ. Come meet this historic structure and the folks who take care of her.

As recently as ten years ago, almost no one was using the words “vacation spot” and “West Jefferson” in the same sentence. My how times have changed. Once sleepy Main Street has new shops, restaurants, and public art murals on many buildings. And because Ashe County is one of the largest producers of Christmas trees in North Carolina, it’s only fitting that West Jefferson is the site of the annual “Christmas in July” festival. Come see all that this exciting Tar Heel town has to offer.

The historical interpreters at Old Salem Museums & Gardens in Winston-Salem strive to give modern visitors an authentic look at what life was like in their Colonial community. That look includes what the colonists ate! The wonderful aromas emanating out of the Winkler Bakery today are just as mouth-watering as they were in 1799 when the bakery first opened. Stroll by Winkler’s most afternoons and you’ll smell bread and that most heavenly of confections, Moravian sugar cake, cooking in the same brick oven that has been used to give sustenance to residents and visitors of Salem for over 200 years.
