From the headwaters west of Rosman in Transylvania County, Bland Simpson takes us down the French Broad River. This was the first of the wide streams or “broads” early settlers met flowing into what was then French territory.  From the ill-fated launching of a steamship line in the 1870’s, moon-shine shootouts in Madison County and the great flood of July, 1916, the river claims a rich history.  Today, it’s a whitewater treasure teeming with wildlife thanks in part to local clean-up efforts.

The top floor of the Biltmore House served three purposes: an Observatory overlooking the sweeping Appalachian landscape and adjacent outdoor balconies; the Architectural Model Room housing Richard Morris Hunt’s 1889 architectural model of Biltmore House and the female servants' quarters.  At the onset of the 20th Century, securing a job as a ladies' maid in the house offered a private room, indoor plumbing and central heat; something many Asheville women did not have in their homes.  Come see the newly restored fourth floor of George Vanderbilt's legendary estate.

The North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores has reopened a new facility tripling the size of its former space. Under the new theme, "From North Carolina's Mountains to the Sea", nearly 40 exhibits house 2,500 animals representing the state's aquatic zones.  Dive into the centerpiece display "Living Shipwreck" featuring a replicated German submarine the Coast Guard sank off our coast during World War II. Talk with divers via underwater microphones as they swim with sharks and other colorful fishes commonly found around shipwrecks.  Take in the 32-foot waterfall, cypress swamp, lionfish, lobster and octopus displays plus the Piedmont Gallery to catch the frolicking river otters. Join us for this aquatic wonder!
