This month, we’ll explore the trains and railways of our state. At the North Carolina Transportation Museum, we’ll share the excitement of riding one of the vintage rail cars pulled by historic engine No. 6133. Next, we take a ride on an Amtrak corridor route. And climb aboard a freight train making its run from Asheville to Old Fort. In Spencer, NC, we'll see the ebb and flow of computer-controlled freight traffic in Norfolk Southern's classification yard. Join us to recapture our railway's rich history and the future of this Tar Heel mode of transport.

Next, we'll travel to the Yadkin River valley with Billy Barnes to meet a craftsman who’s bringing antique farm machines back to life. Each spring, Tom Winkler sets his beloved mules to work on old-time plows, two-wheeled cultivators and whirring hay rakes and bailers. This passion for mechanical restoration is also found in the 19th century stagecoaches he builds with careful attention to historic detail. Join us to meet Tom and an introduction to his awe-inspiring work.

Before television, radio was king. From antique crystal sets to a mix of AM and short wave, recall radio’s inception and progression at the Southern Appalachian Radio Museum in Asheville. At the museum, we'll meet John Travis, the Museum Treasurer, who’s helped assemble this impressive collection of vintage equipment. Join us to tap out a message in Morse code, join in a Ham transmission exchange and retrace radio’s golden era.
