Named for the chinquapin, a dwarf chestnut tree formerly abundant in North Carolina, the Chinqua Penn plantation was built in the 1920's by Thomas Jefferson Penn and his wife, Beatrice Schoellkopf Penn. The exquisite home and exotic horticulture collection reflect a passion for art and travel. Today, current owners, Calvin and Lisa Phelps continue that legacy. When Daphne and Michael O’Brien remapped their academic and photography careers to settle on a farm that has been in Michael’s family for eight generations, they didn’t expect a few rows of flowers to change their lives. Those rows became a flourishing flower farm. Today, with their son, they’re among a small group of farmers making the majority of their living from an alternative crop of specialty cut flowers. Come meet this enterprising family and see why their farm is such a success.
