Jesse
Wharton Elementary School in Greensboro, NC was founded in
1926 with five teachers. Today, the school has more than 114
people on staff and serves 845 students. Five years ago the
staff at Jesse Wharton Elementary School adopted the Paideia
program. Since then, all teachers have been trained to use
the Paideia seminar, and many of the teachers have also trained
to use the Paideia coached project. This year, Jesse Wharton
has a new principal. Doris Brown has 15 years of experience
in using Paideia in the classroom. The teachers at Jesse Wharton
Elementary School say they like using Paideia because helps
students build critical thinking skills. Parents say their
children have a better learning experience because Paideia
requires them to participate in the classroom in different
ways. Jesse Wharton also has a special program for students
who have moved to North Carolina from foreign countries. Teachers
say the Paideia seminars help the new students share their
culture and background with other students.
