Principal
Bluford Elementary School
Greensboro, NC
Tanya
Feagins attended Guilford College, where seminars were frequently
used with upper classmen. Feagins' undergraduate degree was
in elementary education during the period of the Open Classroom
and influenced by Quaker traditions and philosophies.
During
her years as a classroom teacher, Feagins pursued graduate
degrees in educational administration at the University of
North Carolina at Greensboro with took some course work at
Virginia Tech. in Blacksburg. She served as an assistant principal
at one elementary school, two middle schools, and one high
school. Faculty at the middle school went on a retreat to
the Institute of Government at Chapel Hill and studied the
Paideia philosophy. While at the high school Feagins coordinated
a course in Paideia with United States history and literature
combined into a two-block course.
Six years
ago, Feagins became the principal of Bluford Elementary School
and was thrilled to continue with the Paideia philosophy.
She believes the communications theme and strong reading program
at the school integrates beautifully with seminar teaching
and coached projects. For the last five years Bluford has
been recognized as a School of Distinction by the state of
North Carolina.
