Schools Making the Grade

Welborn Middle School

Jeff German, principalWelborn Middle School is located in High Point, NC. It is a growing school serving 883 students. For the past three years, teachers at Welborn have used the Paideia teaching method. Teachers say Paideia seminars and coached projects help them prepare students for North Carolina's statewide testing program. Principal Jeff German says Paideia encourages students to take charge of their learning and to become active participants in the classroom. Teachers agree that students are more verbal and analytical during Paideia seminars. The seminars also help teachers and students tackle the issues involved with character education. Welborn often finds itself in the spotlight as educators from across the state and nation stop by to see how the Paideia teaching method is working at the school.
