UNC-TV's High School Assembly Presents Diaries of Teen Mothers
Tapes Thursday, September 29, at 10 AM-Airs at 1 PM
Join Eszter Vajda for High School Assembly, UNC-TV's one-hour program for and about high school students in North Carolina. On this edition, Thursday, September 29, at 1 PM, High School Assembly takes a close-up look at teen pregnancy in North Carolina's schools. Meet young women and men dealing with this issue.
As Washington High School (www.beaufort.k12.nc.us/whs) prepares for its homecoming celebrations, UNC-TV's High School Assembly brings a timely and sober topic to light. The rising rate of teen motherhood in Beaufort County is a critical one, considering the overall rate of teen pregnancy in North Carolina has dropped over the past year. Beaufort County Schools is exercising leadership on this issue through their Adolescent Parenting Program, which provides education and support for students facing unexpected pregnancy. Hear what teens say they're learning about pregnancy and parenthood, and how the program has helped.
Program Guests:
- Tanya Squires-A senior at Washington High who expects to deliver any day now (as of September 23)
- Monique Latham-A senior at Washington High and mother of a 1-year-old daughter
- Steven Bonner-A senior at Washington High and father of a 1-year-old daughter
- Darlene Moss-Coordinator for the Beaufort County Adolescent Parenting Program
- Harold Brewer-Chair of the Board of the Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention Coalition of North Carolina and a retired superintendent who battled high teen pregnancy rates in Montgomery County, NC
- Terri Mitchell, PhD-A professor in the department of Health Education at East Carolina University who teaches the abstinence-until marriage-curriculum and trains teachers across North Carolina through the North Carolina Comprehensive School Health Training Center
High School Assembly is part of UNC-TV's ongoing commitment to producing programs for and about North Carolina. Member-supported UNC-TV's 11 stations comprise North Carolina's only statewide television network, made possible through a unique partnership of public investment and private support.
