UNC Board of Governors Appoints Phil Kirk, Gary York to the UNC-TV Board of Trustees
The University of North Carolina Board of Governors has appointed two new members to the UNC-TV Board of Trustees: Phil Kirk of Raleigh and Gary York of Pilot Mountain. Both appointments will run through June 30, 2006.
Mr. Kirk is the President and Secretary of the North Carolina Citizens for Business and Industry (NCCBI), and the publisher of North Carolina magazine, positions he has held for 16 years. He has a long and distinguished history of involvement in education, journalism, government, and economic development. Among his many accomplishments are election to the North Carolina State Senate, service as chief of staff to former Governors Jim Holshouser and Jim Martin, chief of staff to former U.S. Senator Jim Broyhill, service as Chairman of the State Board of Education, and chair of the $3.1 billion Higher Education Improvement Bonds campaign in 2000, which included funding for UNC-TV's federally-mandated conversion to digital broadcasting technology. He is a graduate of Catawba College.
Mr. York is a business entrepreneur whose successful ventures include the York Oil Company, Neighbors Stores, Action Outdoor Advertising, GTY Trucking, radio station WIFM in Elkin, and Dr. Flippins, a bed-and-breakfast inn. He has a long record of service in civic and community affairs, including service on the Guilford College Board of Trustees, service on the Mount Airy Board of Education, and service as a Surry County Commissioner. He is a graduate of both Guilford College and of Bucknell University.
UNC-TV Director and General Manager Tom Howe welcomed the appointments, saying "We are certainly privileged to have such distinguished North Carolinians as Phil Kirk and Gary York as members of the UNC-TV Board of Trustees. I am sure that we will benefit greatly from their experience, their support and their wise counsel."
Member-supported UNC-TV is North Carolina's statewide digital public television service.
