North Carolina Bookwatch

Author Joanna Catherine Scott Shares The Road from Chapel Hill
On UNC-TV’s North Carolina Bookwatch, Friday, August 10, at 9:30 PM

From author Joanna Catherine Scott comes The Road from Chapel Hill—a sweeping tale of the Civil War, unique in its perspective and exquisitely woven, in which young Southerners worlds apart are joined in a quest for something greater than themselves.

In The Road from Chapel Hill, Eugenia Mae Spotswood, the daughter of a failed aristocrat, longs to regain the life she lost. The slave Tom wants one thing: freedom. After becoming the property of Eugenia Mae, a dangerous affection grows. But he learns freedom is not something she can give him—he must fight for it himself.

In the latest episode of UNC-TV’s local literary series North Carolina Bookwatch with D.G. Martin, premiering Friday, August 10, at 9:30 PM, the award-winning author shares this unforgettable epic novel based in the Antebellum South.

“It has always seemed to me that everybody needs a story of their own. That’s what makes us human. And Tom, like many slaves, didn’t.” Scott said. “So eventually I decided I would find him on the road from Chapel Hill. I wrote this, in a sense, to make up for what happened to him.”

Joanna Catherine Scott was born in England and raised in Australia, and took her graduate degree in Philosophy at Duke University. She is also the author of Cassandra Lost and The Lucky Gourd Shop.

Don’t miss DG Martin’s all-new interview with Joanna Catherine Scott on North Carolina Bookwatch, Friday, August 10, at 9:30 PM, with an encore episode airing Sunday, August 12, at 5 PM, only on UNC-TV!

During the 20-week, 10th anniversary season of North Carolina Bookwatch, guests also include: J. Peder Zane (The Top Ten), Gov. Michael Easley (Look Out, College, Here I Come!), Michele Bowen (Holy Ghost Corner), Neal Thompson (Driving With the Devil), Joseph Bathanti (Coventry), James Dodson (Beautiful Madness), Dan Heath (Made to Stick), Margaret Maron (Hard Row), James Peacock (Grounded Globalism: How the U.S. South Embraces the World), Tim Madigan (I’m Proud of You), Melton McLaurin (The Marines of Montford Point), Kathryn Stripling Byer (Coming to Rest), David Guy (Jake Fades),  Georgann Eubanks (Literary Trails of the North Carolina Mountains), Zelda Lockhart (Cold Running Creek), Mike Lassiter (Our Vanishing Americana: A North Carolina Portrait), Joe and Terry Graedon (Best Choices from the People’s Pharmacy), Fred Hobson (Off the Rim), and William Powell (Encyclopedia of North Carolina).
