North Carolina Bookwatch

Ron RashAuthor Ron Rash Shares His Latest, Serena
On UNC-TV’s North Carolina Bookwatch,
Sunday, January 3, at 5 PM

In author Ron Rash’s latest Serena, the year is 1929, and newlyweds George and Serena Pemberton arrive from Boston in the North Carolina mountains to create a timber empire. Although George has already lived in the camp long enough to father an illegitimate child, Serena is new to the mountains—but she soon shows herself the equal of any worker--overseeing crews, hunting rattlesnakes, even saving her husband’s life in the wilderness.

Together, this Lord and Lady Macbeth of the woodlands ruthlessly kill or vanquish all who fall out of favor. Yet when Serena learns that she will never bear a child, she vengefully sets out to kill the son George had without her.

In an all-new episode of UNC-TV’s statewide literary series, North Carolina Bookwatch, with D.G. Martin, premiering Sunday, January 3, at 5 PM, Ron Rash shares the story behind the Pemberton’s intense, passionate marriage that begins to unravel just as their story moves toward its shocking reckoning.

Ron Rash is the author of three prize-winning novels: One Foot in Eden, Saints atthe River, and The World Made Straight; three collections of poems; and two collections of stories. A recipient of the O. Henry Prize, he holds the John Parris Chair in Appalachian Studies at Western Carolina University.

Don’t miss D.G. Martin’s all-new interview with Ron Rash on North Carolina Bookwatch, Sunday, January 3, at 5 PM, only on UNC-TV!
