October brings exciting explorations into our state’s special sites to you on Our State Wednesday, October 4, at 8 PM (repeating Thursday, October 5, at 9:30 PM), see the restoration of Raleigh's treasured 1911 Dentzel carousel on Pullen Park Carousel, enjoy delicious baked treats at the Old Salem Bakery in Winston-Salem and visit the charming mountain town of West Jefferson.

Pullen Park Carousel—This three-abreast, stationary and galloping menagerie machine, features two chariots and 52 animals (16 stationary and 36 galloping). A Wurlitzer 125 Military Band Organ, dating from 1900 to 1924, still provides the music. Accepted for the National Register of Historic Places in 1976, the carousel underwent its first major restoration from 1977 to 1982, and became the first in which layers of park paint were entirely removed to expose and save the original paint. The Pullen Park carousel is one of only 23 remaining historic Dentzel carousels in the world—14 of which still operate in North America—and one of two in North Carolina (the other one resides at the Burlington City Park).

Old Salem Bakery— Winkler Bakery, as many of Old Salem’s shops, remains a working, living history museum in which staff serve as both bakers and interpreters of this delicious slice of our state’s history. A sweet staple since 1800, Winkler’s workers still bake the signature bread, cookies and sugarcake as they have for generations in the bakery’s wood-fired domed brick back oven.

Tar Heel Towns: West Jefferson—Nestled in northwest North Carolina’s sylvan Blue Ridge Mountains, this High Country town sports a variety of gift and antique shops, cafés, tree farms, mountain music makers, frescoes and the Ashe County Cheese Company. It’s also known for the New River, the world's second oldest river and one of a few that flows north.

The rest of the month offers other interesting forays into the delightful depths of Our State. Subsequent Thursday evenings, at 9:30, enjoy more of the best of Our State!
