Catch Another All-New Look at the Old North State!
THIS MONTH ON UNC-TV'S OUR STATE, ARTS GROW STRONG AT PENLAND!
Celebrate 75 Years of Arts at Western NC's Crafts School-Wednesday, March 1, at 8 PM

The March edition of Our State, premiering airing Wednesday, March 1, at 8 PM (repeating Thursday, March 30, at 9:30 PM), discovers a wealth of arts and artists at the renown Penland School of Crafts in North Carolina's mountains; meets eastern North Carolina Artist Ivey Hayes; and revels in the blissful natural palette found in a Chapel Hill Twin Sisters Garden.

Penland School of Crafts-Tucked into a picturesque Mitchell County hillside, like the hidden gems found there, is a place that has provided inspiration for generations of creative souls. Founded in 1929, Penland School originally sought to increase the area's economy by teaching local women weaving skills. Throughout the last 75 years, it's expanded to encompass many craft disciplines including woodworking, metals, jewelry and pottery, just to name a few. See how this dynamic art campus influences the life and works of today's artists.

Artist Ivey Hayes-Born and raised in eastern North Carolina, Ivey Hayes' love for painting began at an early age and spans 30 years. Drawing from personal experiences, this prolific artist's vibrant colors express feeling and emotion, infusing each piece with life and personality. His watercolors depict realistic scenes from the area where he grew up, while his bold acrylics portray rural and dockside scenes, as well as more abstract paintings of people in motion. This award-winning artist's work has been exhibited throughout North Carolina, Washington, DC, Boston and New York, as well as galleries and private collections in the United States and Europe.

Twin Sisters Garden-Right next to the UNC Chapel Hill campus is a beautiful residential street lined with many picturesque front yards. As nice as they are, most folks will tell you that the prettiest yard lies in front of the white Craftsman-style house built just after World War II. Twin 90-year-old sisters Bernice Wade and Barbara Stiles have gardened their section of Carolina Piedmont clay for decades. And every April their showcase spring garden delights visitors from near and far. Twins' neighbor DG Martin visits with the pair and finds out why the sisters love to share their spring garden with the public.
