On the July edition of Our State, premiering Wednesday, July 5, at 8 PM, explore the 264-acre Henderson County home of one of the most significant Americans of the 20th century on Carl Sandburg’s Connemara; discover the world’s largest sanctuary for rare and endangered prosimian primates on Duke Lemur Center; and see Warrensville’s sixth generation of Goodwin family weavers on Buffalo Creek Weavers.

Carl Sandburg’s Connemara—This nationally renowned poet, biographer, lecturer, newspaper columnist, folksinger, author of American fairytales, and winner of two Pulitzer Prizes, moved his family to North Carolina in 1945. Connemara, the farm near Flat Rock, offered Sandburg the peace and solitude required for his writing and pasture upon which Mrs. Sandburg raised her champion dairy goats. Join the Sandburgs’ granddaughter Paula Steichen Polega as she recalls growing up at Connemara.

Duke Lemur Center—Established in 1966, the Duke Lemur Center is the largest sanctuary for rare and endangered prosimians—primates that evolved before monkeys, apes and humans—in the world. Nestled on 85 acres in Duke Forest, the DLC houses about 250 animals, including 233 lemurs encompassing 15 species, along with lorises from India and Southeast Asia and bushbabies from Africa.

Buffalo Creek Weavers—The family of Buffalo Creek Weavers, now sixth and seventh generations, remain dedicated to preserving the history and heritage of weaving. Buffalo Creek Weavers offer beautiful coverlets in historic patterns from the 1700s and 1800 woven on antique looms of the early 19th century.
