As Temperatures Soar, So Do the Specials on UNC-TV’s SummerFest 2007!
UNC-TV’s SUMMERFEST—AUGUST 4-12
Just in time for the season’s sweltering heat is a month full of the hottest all-new specials and programming favorites as UNC-TV presents SummerFest, Saturday, August 4, through Sunday, August 12. Get a first taste of SummerFest’s heat Saturday, August 4, at 6 PM, with Lawrence Welk’s TV Treasures. Then join Robert Goulet for a toe-tapping trip down music’s memory lane when My Music: 50s Pop Parade premieres, at 8 PM, with live performances and archival classics from such classic crooners as Ed Ames, Rosemary Clooney, Perry Como, The Four Aces, The Four Lads, The Ink Spots, The Mills Brothers, Patti Page, Jerry Vale, Margaret Whiting, Andy Williams and more.
Sunday, August 5, at 6 PM, Claiborne Young tours Northern Albermarle on Cruising Carolina. The hits just keep on coming when public television’s favorite fiddling phenom returns for Andre Rieu: Radio City Music Hall: Live in New York. The self-proclaimed “Flying Dutchman” takes a bite out of the Big Apple, with a stirring tribute to Frank Sinatra, special performances from the Harlem Gospel Choir, alongside the storied sounds of the Strauss Orchestra. Once you’ve taken in the music, turn your gaze to classic murder and mystery, as MYSTERY! digs into the archives for a classic episode of The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, at 9 PM. The late Jeremy Brett returns as the ever-suave sleuth dispatched to solve A Scandal in Bohemia.
Join popular motivational lecturer and best-selling author Dr. Wayne Dyer as he turns his focus to living a simple and balanced existence in the all-new self-help special, Dr. Wayne Dyer: Change Your Thoughts, Change Your Life, Monday, August 6, at 8 PM. In this thought-provoking program, public television’s favorite teacher of transformational wisdom combines his years of empowering experiences with his recent theories of the Universe’s natural laws to create a comprehensive list of truths and guidelines to apply to today’s world.
Tuesday, August 7, at 8 PM, the late Johnny Cash invites you to “ride that train” for the premiere of Johnny Cash: A Man and his Vision, featuring fantastic footage from the Man in Black’s unique half-decade variety series, The Johnny Cash Show. In part one of this retrospective, entitled Pop/Rock, fans both young and old are introduced to the best and brightest guest performances of the genre, including archival clips of Bob Dylan and Neil Young. At 9 PM, get a beachfront view of bona fide hitmaking with the all-new special The Beach Boys: Endless Harmony. This premier documentary provides a unique portrait of this seminal California pop band, weaving 45 of the group's songs through extended interview segments with all the original members, key musicians involved in their career-defining recordings, and astute industry observers of the golden age of these golden “Boys.”
In the toe-tapping My Music tradition, put on your platform shoes Wednesday, August 8, at 8 PM for the latest incarnation, My Music: The 70s Experience. Hosted by The Brady Bunch's Barry Williams, this all-new special includes contemporary and classic archival performances with some of the most loved tunes of the ‘70s.
Saturday and Sunday, August 11-12, enjoy another full weekend of SummerFest premieres and favorites, beginning Saturday August 11, at 6 PM. Although he passed away three decades ago, Elvis Lives: The 25th Anniversary Concert brings the King back in a glorious mix of classic concert footage and moving memories from his former bandmates. At 8 PM, catch part two of Johnny Cash: A Man and his Vision. In this hour-long episode, entitled Country, head back to the rootsie side of The Johnny Cash Show with performances by Loretta Lynn, Bill Monroe, Charlie Pride and more. At 9 PM, enjoy a treasure trove of honky-tonk hits and Texas swing in Last of the Breed, a once-in-a-lifetime concert event featuring the legendary Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard and Ray Price. Taped in high definition at the Rosemont Theatre in Chicago during the final performance of their recent sold out tour, Willie, Merle and Ray deliver rousing performances of their greatest hits backed by some of the richest voices this side of the Rio Grande.
Sunday, August 12, at 8 PM, enjoy another healing helping of balanced, moral and spiritual advice in Dr. Wayne Dyer: Change Your Thoughts, Change Your Life. Then get ready for the UNC-TV premiere of Anuna: Celtic Orgins, at 6 PM. This original Riverdance vocal group spans over 1,000 years of musical history in an ethereal blend of Irish, British, Middle English, Scots Gaelic, Medieval Irish, Latin and Greek choral music. And in the SummerFest primetime finale, at 8 PM, thrill to some of the greatest moments from Doo-Wop 50, Doo-Wop 51, and Rock Rhythm & Doo Wop—featuring the Chiffons, Del Vikings, Penguins, Melc Carter, Jay & The Americans, and more, on American Soundtrack: Doo Wop’s Best on PBS.
