North Carolina’s WWII Experience
Multi-Year Initiative Begins Saturday, November 11—Veteran’s Day— Beginning at 4 PM!
In anticipation of the 2007 premiere of Ken Burns’ all-new, epic World War II documentary, entitled, The War, join us as UNC-TV kicks off its multi-year initiative, North Carolina’s WWII Experience, Saturday, November 11, beginning at 4 PM.
During this special evening of World War II programming meant to lay the cornerstone for an all-new tribute to the contributions of North Carolina's WWII veterans, enjoy an encore presentation of the award-winning soldier's story, Thank You, Eddie Hart, at 4 PM. This hour-long documentary shares the bittersweet yet inspiring tale of one LaGrange, NC, military man who made the ultimate sacrifice abroad and a Dutch family who passed down the legacy of a promise kept.
At 6 PM, explore “The Great War” from the hills of Europe to the waters of the Pacific with first-person interviews, archival footage, and historic photos capturing the oral histories of veterans in two programs from KUED in Utah, Utah World War II Stories: Europe and Utah World War II Stories: The Pacific.
Sixty years after the end of World War II, the memories of Utah veterans who fought for the liberation of Europe remain vivid. The fear, the danger, the sorrow, and the relief of survival—from D-Day to victory in Europe—all come to life for succeeding generations as KUED presents Utah World War II Stories: Europe, part of its landmark series honoring Utah’s members of “The Greatest Generation.” See the soldiers, most of them teenagers at the time, unfamiliar with killing and death when they traveled “across the pond.” From Lou Slama of Salt Lake City who still chokes up when he remembers his best buddy dying in his arms to Lieutenant Pollet who said, “You kill ‘em first so they can’t kill you,” see all sides of World War II’s European front from the men who lived to tell the tales.
Showing there’s not just one story of World War II, Utah World War II Stories: The Pacific shares the War from the other side of the globe in a battlefield that encompassed 64 million square miles of the Pacific Ocean. This stirring documentary explores how, in the skies above, the depths below, on worthless volcanic outcroppings and in steaming island jungles, Utahns along with hundreds of thousands of other Americans would offer themselves up with bravery and courage.
Through this one-night pledge event, show your support and assist us in making history as UNC-TV prepares to archive the stories of the Tar Heel State’s World War II veterans. Your financial contribution during this special evening will help to capture and preserve North Carolinians' World War II experiences for future generations.
