North Carolina's WWII Experience

UNC-TV Presents…The North Carolina’s World War II Experience Website

As a companion to Ken Burns’ World War II upcoming documentary series, THE WAR and UNC-TV’s own multi-year initiative, North Carolina's World War II Experience, UNC-TV further commemorates this pivotal time in our state’s history with the July 4th 2007 launch of the North Carolina's World War II Experience website (www.unctv.org/WWII).

This all-new website provides an array of innovative online WWII resources, including:

  • A World War II veteran's stories archive, capturing the unique experiences of North Carolinians from the home front to the frontlines;
  • Exclusive video presentations of World War II features, interviews, and other content within UNC-TV's original series;
  • Online listings of important local World War II resources and events occurring in various locales around the state;
  • A World War II timeline, including important North Carolina events; and
  • A repository for viewer tributes and comments, including acknowledgments from veterans' families & friends, community event bulletins, and submitted information & resources.

As part of this momentous initiative, the North Carolina's World War II Experience website will also provide the latest information about UNC-TV’s own upcoming documentaries based on local veteran’s stories—putting into context North Carolina’s unique role in supporting, training, fighting and winning World War II.

“We're hoping that our website about North Carolina's World War II Experience will be an important companion to the broadcast of Ken Burns' THE WAR and the two related UNC-TV documentaries coming in the future,” says Steve Volstad, UNC-TV’s Director of Communications.   “By providing a forum for veterans and their friends and families to share their stories and reflections, we want to create an even more personal, interactive and engaging experience that will add meaning to and extend the life of this important moment in public television history.”

This online companion will continually combine broadcast programming and related resources to connect generations of North Carolinians and help to capture and preserve the World War II stories and experiences that are such a vital part of our state’s history.

In order to share your own North Carolina World War II story and become a part of the experience, please visit UNC-TV’s North Carolina's WWII Experience website today,

UNC-TV is committed to producing and broadcasting programs for and about North Carolina, making it the state’s most important source of information about North Carolina.
