Prince of Dark Corners
Exposes Local Outlaw Lewis Redmond!
Premieres Thursday, January 3, at 10 PM

Lewis RedmondAt the time of his 1881 Swain County capture, Lewis Redmond was the most famous outlaw in the country, even outshining criminal contemporaries such as Billy “The Kid” and Jesse James.

While Northern journalists pegged Redmond as a degenerate, cold-blooded murderer, some saw him as an American Robin Hood in the lean years of Reconstruction, fighting revenuers and bootlegging ‘moonshine’ to pay their taxes and save their land.

The documentary Prince of Dark Corners sheds light on this mysterious time and place in American history. Milton Higgins delivers a tour de force portraying Redmond in Gary Carden’s masterwork of Appalachian identity. Higgins has acted in several of Carden’s dramatic works, and often directs and performs at the Parkway Playhouse in Burnsville. Local independent filmmaker Neal Hutcheson served as producer and director for The Prince of Dark Corners.

Gary Carden is a dramatist, folklorist and storyteller whose work has drawn wide praise for its authenticity and insight into mountain culture.” His awards and honors include the 2006 Brown-Hudson Folklore Award.
