D.G. Martin, host of North Carolina Bookwatch, travels to Germany to unravel the mystery of Princess Charlotte, namesake of North Carolina's largest city. With help from the local Mecklenburg-area family patriarch, Martin and other Charlotteans undertake a quest to discover the history of the woman who inspired the Queen City's name.
Born May 19, 1744 as Princess Sophia Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, Charlotte first met her future husband, King George III, on her September wedding day in 1761. This arranged marriage was, nonetheless, fruitful and Queen Charlotte bore 15 children. That she was strong, prolific, a devoted wife and mother and lived to age 74 is common knowledge, but little else is known about Princess Charlotte.
In a gallant effort to learn more about the mysterious woman who became namesake to Charlotte, NC (and Charlottesville, Virginia), Martin organized a fun-filled fact-finding mission to a land once off limits to Americans. Travel along, throughout the beautiful Germany countryside, as Martin helps solve the princess's connection to North Carolina. Join our intrepid Tar Heel travelers as they explore the castle and homeland where Princess Charlotte grew up and delve into her royal past.
