Going the Extra Mile?

10-13 Year Olds are soon-to-be-teens that face pressures with proving themselves, making the grade, and winning at every sport they play. The following case studies are catered to the middle school student, asking the important questions that preteens often face. What would you do?

Case Studies:
Going the Extra Mile?

Sam is a talented 8th grade long jumper for his middle school track team. During a recent track meet hosted by his school, Sam is matched up against a talented 7th grader from his own school. On this particular day, the 7th faults on his first two approaches. Having had similar problems with his approaches when he was just starting out, Sam watches nervously from the sideline, knowing that the 7th grader could beat him if he gives him hints on better ways to approach his jump. The 7th grader has one last jump.

Discussion Questions:

Should Sam assist the younger jumper?

Would it matter if the jumper had more experience?

Would it be different if the younger track athlete were on an opposing team?

Should coaches encourage Sam, as the older athlete, to assist his fellow athletes or to improve his chances?

What would you do?
