PANEL 1

Bill Gutheridge, former men’s basketball coach, University of North Carolina

After serving as an assistant to Dean Smith for 30 years, Bill Gutheridge replaced his longtime boss in 1997. In just three seasons, he led his teams to two Final Four appearances and was the consensus National Coach of the Year in 1997-98. He boasts an NCAA record for being on the sidelines for the most victories in tournament play with 73. He currently serves as a consultant for the UNC athletic department.

James Moeser, chancellor, University of North Carolina

A concert organist, James Moeser began his academic career 35 years ago as an assistant professor and chairman of the organ department at the University of Kansas. He arrived in Chapel Hill in July 1999 after four years as chancellor of the University of Nebraska during which that university’s academic programs improved dramatically. Dr. Moeser also serves on the Board of Trustees for CHARACTER COUNTS! Sports and the Board of Governors of the Josephson Institute of Ethics.

Michael Josephson, president, Josephson Institute and CHARACTER COUNTS! Coalition

After two decades as a law professor and CEO of a legal education and publishing company, Michael Josephson founded the Josephson Institute in 1987, which he serves without compensation. The institute’s projects include CHARACTER COUNTS!, the nations’ largest character-development initiative, and CHARACTER COUNTS! Sports, which launched the Pursuing Victory With Honor campaign in 2000. His award-winning radio commentaries can be heard daily in southern California on KNX 1070 AM.

Ron Kinnamon, chair CHARACTER COUNTS! Coalition

In addition to his work for CHARACTER COUNTS!, Ron Kinnamon serves on the Program Committee and Connect America Advisory Committee for the Points of Light Foundation and the board of governors for the Josephson Institute of Ethics. He recently retired as assistant national executive director of the YMCA of the USA after 38 years. Mr. Kinnamon is an active speaker on family issues and volunteers his time with several community and church organizations in Chicago.

Charlie Adams, executive director, North Carolina High School Athletic Association

Charlie Adams has served young athletes in the state of North Carolina for his entire professional life. He has been executive director of the NCHSAA for 17 years, the same amount of time he previously served there as assistant executive director and supervisor of officials. He is a member of the Halls of Fame at East Carolina University, his alma mater and at Cary High School where he began his career as a basketball coach.

Tom Selleck, actor, producer

Before embarking on a highly successful acting career, Tom Selleck was a star athlete at the University of Southern California, playing both basketball and volleyball. As a volleyball player, he was two-time national champion and a three-time All-American selection, and competed on the pro beach volleyball tour. Mr. Selleck also serves on the Board of Governors for the Josephson Institute of Ethics.
