Matt Doherty, Men’s basketball coach, University of North Carolina
Recently named the Associated Press’ National Coach of the Year, Mr. Doherty led the Tar heels to the Number one ranking in the country his first season at Chapel Hill. He Played for UNC from 1980-84 and served as head coach at Notre Dame before coming to North Carolina.
Anson Dorrance, women’s soccer coach, University of North Carolina
By far the most successful coach in the history of collegiate women’s soccer, Anson Dorrancv4e has led the Tar Hells to 16 NCAA championships in 22 years, losing only 24 games. He also led the United states women’s national team to its first World Cup title in 1992.
Herb Goins, director of athletics, Guilford County Schools
An educator and athletic administrator for the past 32 years, Herb Goins previously coached golf, wrestling and a football team he led to two state championships. Guilford County Schools, his current charge, is a district of 63,000 students.
Sylvia Hatchell, women’s basketball coach, University of North Carolina
A lifelong Tar Heel fan, Sylvia Hatchel got her dream job in 1986 and has since led her tam to a national championship and has been named National Coach of the Year. She previously coached at Francis Marion University for 11 years and in six international competitions.
Ralph Holloway, director of athletics, West Carteret High School
Ralph Holloway began his career as a women’s high school track coach, where his teams won to state championships. He has since been named regional Athletic Director of the Year and serves on the NCHSSA and NCHSADA Boards of Directors.
Kay Yow, women’s basketball coach, North Carolina State University
A past president of the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association, Kay Yow is just the fifth coach in women’s basketball history to win 600 career games. She is a member f the women’s sports and women’s basketball hall of fame and is a finalist this year for the National Basketball Hall of Fame.
John Clougherty, Division I Basketball Official
A veteran NCAA basketball official, Raleigh, NC’s John Clougherty has become a leading advocate for game management that increases sportsmanship among, fans, coaches and players and thereby reducing the more commonly known occurrence of “referee rage.”
PRESENTATION Lin Dawson, director of athletics, North Carolina Central University
An ordained minister, Lin Dawson came to North Carolina central after five years as a n associate athletic director at North Carolina State. Since his 10-year NFL career ended, he has focused on the compete development of student-athletes, working with universities and such organizations as the Center for the Study of Sport in Society at Northeastern University and the National Consortium for Academics and Sports.
