Topic: THE COACH AS A TEACHER Dick Baddour, director of athletics, University of North Carolina
In his 34th year of continuous service to UNC, Dick Baddour is in his fourth as athletic director. He has chaired the ACC Athletic Directors and will serve as a member of the ACC Committees on football, basketball and television.
Dick Knox, supervisor of officials, North Carolina High School Athletic Association
A football and basketball coach for 23 years, Dick Knox also logged extensive time as an official. He joined the NCHSAA in 1984, and currently serves as chairman of the national Federation of State High School Associations Basketball Rules Committee.
Jim Maxwell, head coach, swimming, Charles E. Jordan High School
Jim Maxwell has coached swimming on a voluntary basis for 28 years; his boys and girls programs have combined for five state championships since 1980. He is also the chair of the NCHSAA Swimming Advisory Committee.
Tom Selleck, actor, producer
Before embarking on a highly successful acting career, Tom Selleck was a star athlete at the University of Southern California, playing both basketball and volleyball. As a volleyball player, he was two-time national champion and a three-time All-American selection, and competed on the pro beach volleyball tour. Mr. Selleck also serves on the Board of Governors for the Josephson Institute of Ethics.
Dale Smith, director of athletics, City of Raleigh
Dale Smith has been working for the City of Raleigh for 20 years, serving mostly community centers before taking responsibility for the largest program area within the Raleigh Parks and Recreation Department in 2000. She attended North Carolina State University where she played varsity softball.
Kathy Stefanou, head coach, girls’ volleyball, Millbrook High School
In her 30 years as a teacher, Kathy Stefanou has served as the first female officer of the CAP-9 Athletic Conference, helping add the first girls’ sports to the conference. She has also founded several year-round youth volleyball programs.
George Whitfield, assistant coach, baseball, East Carolina University
In 40 years of coaching, George Whitfield has led teams to four state high school championships and has been inducted into the American Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame and the NCHSSA Hall of Fame.

Woody Durham, play-by-play announcer, University of North Carolina
Woody Durham is beginning his 30th year as the "Voice of the Tar Heels" in 2000. A native of Mebane, N.C., Durham grew up in Albemarle, N.C., and began his broadcasting career with WZKY Radio at age 16. He graduated from UNC in 1963 with a degree in Radio, Television and Motion Pictures. In 1981, Durham was named vice president and executive sports director at Tar Heel Sports Marketing. Since taking over play-by-play duties in 1971, he has become a permanent fixture behind the microphone during Tar Heel football and basketball games. Durham has been named North Carolina Sportscaster of the Year 10 times.
Tom Osborne, US Congressman; former head coach, football, University of Nebraska
In 25 years as coach at Nebraska, Tom Osborne led his teams to bowl games in each of those seasons, losing no more than three games in any one. His last five years, however, in which he won 60 games and three national titles, will be his greatest legacy. Last November, Mr. Osborne was elected to the United States Congress as a Representative from Nebraska.
Dean Smith, former head coach, men’s basketball, University of North Carolina
The winningest coach in college basketball history, Dean Smith won two national championships and competed in 11 final fours. His teams won 20 or more games 27 straight years and made 23 consecutive appearances in the postseason. Even more impressive is that 96 percent of the lettermen in his program graduated. He is a member of the National Basketball hall of Fame as well as the North Carolina Hall of Fame, and was named Sportsman of the Year by Sports illustrated in 1997.
