In his fourth year at Duke, Brad Berndt oversees the academic efforts of all athletes, including financial aid, NCAA eligibility, drug education and testing and community outreach. He has previously worked at Appalachian State University and University of Wisconsin.
Jan Boxill, academic advisor, women’s basketball, University of North Carolina
Jan Boxill, a lecturer and associate chair of UNC philosophy department, is now in her 10th year as team’s academic advisor. She also is the public address announcer for home games and the team’s color commentator for radio broadcasts of road games.
Lin Dawson, director of athletics, North Carolina Central University
An ordained minister, Lin Dawson came to North Carolina central after five years as a n associate athletic director at North Carolina State. Since his 10-year NFL career ended, he has focused on the compete development of student-athletes, working with universities and such organizations as the Center for the Study of Sport in Society at Northeastern University and the National Consortium for Academics and Sports.
SPORTSMANSHIP RESOURCES AND IMPLEMENTATION STRATEGIES Charlie Adams, executive director, North Carolina High School Athletic Association
Charlie Adams has served young athletes in the state of North Carolina for his entire professional life. He has been executive director of the NCHSAA for 17 years, the same amount of time he previously served there as assistant executive director and supervisor of officials. He is a member of the Halls of Fame at East Carolina University, his alma mater and at Cary High School where he began his career as a basketball coach.
Jay Bilas, college basketball analyst, ESPN
Jay Bilas joined ESPN as a college basketball analyst for the 1995-96 season. He was a four-year starter at Duke from 1983-86 and also served as a football and soccer commentator for the Duke student cable station as an undergraduate. After playing professionally in Italy and Spain, he returned to Duke as an assistant coach from 1990-92 and attended law school. In addition to his work for ESPN, Mr. Bilas is a practicing attorney in North Carolina.
Bill Gutheridge, former men’s basketball coach, University of North Carolina
After serving as an assistant to Dean Smith for 30 years, Bill Gutheridge replaced his longtime boss in 1997. In just three seasons, he led his teams to two Final Four appearances and was the consensus National Coach of the Year in 1997-98. He boasts an NCAA record for being on the sidelines for the most victories in tournament play with 73. He currently serves as a consultant for the UNC athletic department.
