Born in Paris in 1840, Augusté Rodin discovered sculpture at the age of 15. He quickly grew in stature until his contemporaries considered him the most innovative and influential sculptor since Michelangelo. Rodin's primary subject and inspiration was the human body; his artistic mission was to celebrate the vitality of the human spirit. By altering traditional poses and gestures Rodin brought a new freedom to sculpture, a freedom that celebrated psychological depth, a faithfulness to nature and startling clarity of vision.
