| John Wilson (WRITER/EDITOR/PRODUCER) is an independent documentary filmmaker based in Chapel Hill, N.C. His previous work with UNC-TV includes Dr. Frank: The Life and Times of Frank Porter Graham, which traces the life of the former UNC president, U.S. senator and U.N. representative. Narrated by Charles Kuralt, the documentary won a regional Emmy Award, a CINE Golden Eagle, and a Chicago International Film Festival Silver Plaque. The Museum of Modern Art selected Dr. Frank for its "New Documentaries" series in 1996.
Wilson also wrote and produced the UNC-TV documentary North Carolina’s Research Triangle Park: An Investment in the Future, a history of the most successful research park in the world narrated by Carl Kasell of National Public Radio. Wilson wrote and produced North Carolina Nurses: A Century of Caring, which documents the history of nursing in the state, which in 1903 became the first in the nation to pass a nurse registration law. Liane Hansen of NPR narrates this UNC-TV documentary.
Wilson’s other productions include A Place on the Hill, the University of North Carolina Bicentennial documentary; A History of Political Awareness, a film presented by Wake Forest University in its successful application for one of three 1988 Bush-Dukakis debates; Richard Leakey: Looking Ahead To The Past, shot on location in Kenya; and a program for the Watch On Washington public television series about the political controversy surrounding the National Endowment for the Arts.
Wilson earned a BA in Biology from UNC and an MFA in Film Production from the University of Southern California. He worked for four years for The Jim Henson Company in Los Angeles, serving as production supervisor, director of new ventures, and Henson Interactive general manager. He was an assistant professor at American University's School of Communication in Washington, D.C., where he won an outstanding achievement award teaching film writing, production and producing. He founded UNC's student television station as an undergraduate, and served as president of the Order of the Golden Fleece, the University's highest honorary society.
David Van Taylor (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) is vice-president of Lumiere Productions, which he joined as Series Producer of the religious-right history series With God on Our Side. His theatrical feature A Perfect Candidate was nominated for an Emmy. Van Taylor has written and directed for PBS, HBO, Discovery, Court TV, Logo, MTV and public radio's This American Life. His first film, Dream Deceivers, was honored by the International Documentary Association. He was Executive Producer of Ghosts Of Attica, which was awarded a duPont-Columbia Silver Baton. Van Taylor graduated from Harvard College with a degree in Sociology and Afro-American Studies, and then taught science in a New York City public school.
Paul Keys (CO-PRODUCER) has worked for 15 years in various roles in video production, including producer, director and editor. He has worked on projects for ESPN, The Learning Channel, HBO, Court TV, MTV, Nickelodeon, and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. Keys has produced numerous projects in the public mental health field, including an award-winning documentary on a greenhouse operated by at-risk youth in Israel. He is currently developing a documentary project on the Virginia Tech tragedy. Keys’ production company, Utopia Video & Film, Inc., is located in Durham, N.C. He graduated with an ABJ degree in Journalism from the University of Georgia.
Chris Frank (ORIGINAL MUSIC COMPOSER) has been a member of the Red Clay Ramblers since 1987. Active in concert, film and stage, he has appeared on Broadway three times in the Tony Award-winning Fool Moon with David Shiner and Bill Irwin, and off-Broadway in 2005 in Lone Star Love. Frank’s scoring credits include two Sam Shepard feature films, six seasons of The Learning Channel’s The Operation, and numerous Discovery Channel documentaries. Senator No: Jesse Helms is Chris’s second original music score for John Wilson, the first being the UNC-TV documentary North Carolina Nurses: A Century of Caring. Chris is the founder and CEO of eFolkMusic.org, a web-based nonprofit supporting folk music and musicians.
Will Patton (NARRATOR) has worked extensively in theatre and film. He starred with Angelina Jolie in A Mighty Heart and is currently filming roles in American Inquisition with Alfre Woodard, Waking Madison with Elizabeth Shue, and Tennessee Williams’ The Loss of a Teardrop Diamond. Patton’s feature films include The Mothman Prophecies, Remember the Titans, No Way Out, Armageddon, Gone in 60 Seconds, Entrapment, The Postman, Trixie, Breakfast Of Champions, Jesus’ Son, After Hours, Cold Heaven, The Punisher, Inventing The Abbotts, The Client, Fled, Copycat, Desperately Seeking Susan, A Shock To The System and Everybody Wins. His independent film work includes The Rapture, In the Soup, The Paint Job, Toll Booth, The Spitfire Grill, and OK Garage (aka All Revved Up). He starred in the television series The Agency on CBS, Steven Spielberg’s Into The West on TNT, and recurs on CBS’s Numb3rs .
On stage, Patton played the leading role in Sam Shepard’s A Lie Of The Mind, and his performances in Shepard’s Fool For Love and Richard Foreman’s What Did He See? earned him two prestigious Obie Awards as Best Actor. He has recorded over 45 audio books, including 19 by James Lee Burke, the 50th Anniversary release of Jack Kerouac’s On the Road, Al Gore’s The Assault on Reason and Charles Frazier’s Thirteen Moons.
Patton was born in Charleston, S.C. He attended the North Carolina School of the Arts and The Actors Studio in New York City.
Warren Gentry (VIDEOGRAPHER) has over 25 years of experience as a videographer, cinematographer and director. He shot the award-winning film, February One, about the Woolworth lunch counter sit-ins, which aired on PBS’s Independent Lens series in 2005. He served as director/cinematographer of Alamance and videographer on Dr. Frank: The Life and Times of Frank Porter Graham, both of which were broadcast on UNC-TV and won regional Emmys. Gentry was videographer on North Carolina’s Research Triangle Park: An Investment in the Future and North Carolina Nurses: A Century of Caring, both of which aired on UNC-TV. He also served as director of photography on Continental, Ohio; Durham, A Self-Portrait; and Melungeon Voices.
