Heralded throughout the country as one of the best places to live and work, North Carolina continues to attract families from hundreds of countries. The challenge to accommodate so many people, experiences and ideas is most pronounced in the world of our children - North Carolina's public schools.

From schoolyards in Hickory to classrooms in Wilmington - and everywhere in between - 1.3 million students, speaking over 170 languages and dialects, continually struggle with their bedrock beliefs about religion, interracial relationships, sexual orientation and more. With so many obstacles, how can children learn to recognize and respect differences, while appreciating the things they all have in common?

UNC-TV's new documentary, Something in Common, offers a candid portrait of nine North Carolina public schools, providing historical perspectives, personal stories and the steps each is taking to deal with issues of diversity. Through interviews with students, teachers and administrators, the hour-long program considers the many ways in which North Carolina has become more representative of the world at large.

North Carolina's school children speak frankly and thoughtfully to producer Donna Campbell about the challenges they face every day - both inside and outside the classroom. As they pose their own questions, these elementary, middle and high school students, from the following schools, remind all citizens that even differences in faith, race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, ability, and economic status leave us all with something in common.
