Take One Step, UNC-TV’s health initiative & outreach campaign concentrates on helping North Carolina women 45+ to increase the frequency and duration of their walking as their first step toward better health.

As part of UNC-TV's local Take One Step initiative, we challenge you to walk across North Carolina— counting your steps every day during the six month period between January 1 and ending on June 30.
- North Carolina is 550 miles wide.
- 2,000 steps = one mile
- There are 181 days in the first six months of the year.
To walk across the state one would need to walk three miles a day or 6,000 steps per day. (It is recommended that we walk 10,000 steps a day to lose weight).
What is the reward?
This project is on an honor system. If you chart your steps and reach the 550 miles, UNC-TV will send you a specially-designed certificate heralding your healthy accomplishment. Also, If you walk 275 miles you can receive a silver certificate. If you increase the number of steps that you take each day by 15% then a special certificate will be sent to you as well. Additionally, there is a special category for handicapped and motor impaired citizens.
What are the potential outcomes of Take One Step?
- Increase the knowledge of the value of exercise to benefit older citizen’s lives;
- Increase the ability to make healthy life choices;
- Increase wellness behaviors;
- Increase life satisfaction;
- Increase participation in community-based leisure activities.
North Carolina already has wonderful groups participating in walking programs all across the state and we invite you to join one and join us in helping our women stay healthy. By partnering with organizations already conducting similar activities throughout the state, our objectives are:
- To encourage participants in this program to increase their steps by at least 15% over a 6 month period through monitoring by a pedometer and log book supplied by a partner;
- To motivate the participants in this project to walk the distance of North Carolina during a six month period by offering special recognition through certificates of achievement;
- To identify and broadcast health programs to supplement this project.
